Doc on victim of Halabja chemical attack wins award at Iran Cinema Celebration

TEHRAN -- “Zmnako”, a film directed by Mehdi Qorbanpur about a victim of Iraq’s chemical weapons attack on the Kurdish city of Halabja in 1988, has been named the best documentary of the 17th Iran Cinema Celebration.

Winners for the documentary section of the celebration were announced during ceremony at Tehran’s Eyvan Shams Hall on Saturday evening.

“Zmnako” is about the new life of 40-day-old newborn that loses his mother after the chemical weapons attack on Halabja.

Producer Mahmud Shakibania received the award from director Reza Mirkarimi, who is the managing director of the Iranian House of Cinema.

Moin Karimeddini was presented the award for best director for his acclaimed documentary “Atlan” about the life story of an Iranian Turkmen horse riding instructor.

Karimeddini also received the award for best editor for “Atlan”.

Saman Lotfian won best cinematographer award and Taher Pishvai and Mehrdad Jelokhani received the award for best sound recording engineer for their collaboration in “Atlan”.

In addition, Arya Aziminejad was honored with the best composer award for collaboration in the documentary.

The Iranian House of Cinema organizes the celebration every year to commemorate Iran’s National Day of Cinema, which will be September 12 this year.

Winners in the categories of short films, animations and documentaries are announced annually before the National Day of Cinema.

The celebration reaches its climax with the announcement of winners in the feature-length films section on that day.
